The original is actually by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on their 1994 album Acoustic, but he is the original songwriter.

I dont care if Kermit the frog sang this song. The words in this song are poetic. The verse that starts with "Id like to have the years ect... is music writing at its best. Genius songwriter. Im just thankful the writer allowed Rascal Flatts to perform this masterpiece. If not most would never have had the opportunity to enjoy as I have. So thank you Mr Hummon and all that made it possible.
