Slap bass is done either by slapping the instrument with the hand or by pulling the strings out so far that they slap against the finger board. The latter technique is what was used on this record.

Thanks for posting this. Luis Russell had one of the greatest bands-at its peak in 1929. Most of the stars in the band were from New Orleans,for example Pops Foster and Paul Barbarin-the basis of that rhythm section. We are lucky that the band was exceptionally well recorded by the Okeh technicians and issued on the silky smooth Parlophones and Odeons in Europe.

Not 100% but slapping the bass meant the hand slapped the wood of the bass on the follow through from the strings..Plucking meant no contact with the woodwork
