Big Bang
Victor Feldman and Carmel Jones called Land the best tenor man in jazz. He was on all of the Roach-Clifford Brown albums except one. He shadows Clifford (best of all time) note for note, sometimes superseding him. And on a track with Rollins, he makes Sonny sound deficient (at the Beehive, Vol. 2.) His tone has a burnished edge, his phrases are dynamically contoured, his articulations are as clean and fast as any tenor man ever. And Butler is a musical twin, his solos pyrotechnical & musical.

Great album (The Fox) and so nice to hear quirky Elmo. He certainly had an original style.

Herbie Lewis was 18 years old when he played on this record. I could play bass for a hundred years and will never be as good as Herbie was at 18. What a master!
