That statement is just unjustifiable. There are many brave, heroic, and good people in the Catholic church - not born into it but there out of conviction, who are are at odds with its power structures and theology, anti-celibacy (which is at the root of its distorted notions of sexuality) and horrified by the Magdalene scandal. All insitutions, secular and non are full of good and bad people (and indifferent).
I am no Catholic but I defend their right to be there (and tryijng to change it).

Being French, the French told the catholic church to get lost a long time ago. The worst insult usually involve the catholic church. Les bonnes soeurs pejorative expression, among many.I love the Irish having lived in The RoI for two years in Dublin only 4 years after the Christian brothers St David off the Malahide road and the last Magdalen laundries closed!! 1996 unbelievable!!!

That answer is so interesting -and beyond excellent. You have chosen the right way -the way of liberation -freed from the shackles of a religious fascism. It sounds utterly horrendous & as I was brought up (at the time) in an Atheist family in England I was mercifully free from such brainwashing, Yr comment about parallels with Islamic facism is very telling.
How tough was it at 18 (a tender age), renouncing your past/upbringing. Was it a traumatic break requiring courage or did you have help?
