Yes my baby left me,
Never said a word.
Was it something I done,
Something that she heard?
My baby left me,
My baby left me.
My baby even left me,
Never said a word.
Now I stand at my window,
Wring my hands and cry.
I hate to lose that woman,
Hate to say goodbye.
You know she left me,
Yes, she left me.
My baby even left me,
Never said a word.
Baby, one of these mornings,
Lord, it won’t be long,
You’ll look for me and,
Baby, and daddy he’ll be gone.
You know you left me,
You know you left me.
My baby even left me,
Never said a word.
Now, I stand at my window,
Wring my hands and moan.
All I know is that
The one I love is gone.
My baby left me,
You know she left me.
My baby even left me,
Never said a word.
Those written lyrics are the ones that Elvis sang. They are different from the lyrics heard on this video by Crudup, which are extremely similar to many other Crudup songs, but mixed around.
Almost all, (some would argue all ) music has its roots in African rhythms and heritage. These rhythms brought over in the belly of slave ships were recited in the fields to lessen the toil of bondage. Later, words were added to express feelings of sorrow and sometimes to celebrate joy and embrace spirituality. Over decades theses sounds left the fields and migrated throughout the US and beyond. However, segregation, racist ideologies and ignorance, (which still exists) has not allowed us to fully embrace this rich heritage.Without this heritage, jazz, swing, blues, country, soul and rock would not exist as we know it. Thank you Tin pan alley, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger, et al. for embracing this rich heritage and sharing it with the world.
