nono they started in russia. northern russia was most definetly rus, in the region around ladoga, thats "old rus" kiev is "new rus". staraya ladoga (aldeigjuborg) was estabilshed around 750 and novgorod(holmgarðr) settled in 862 . kiev was not conquered until 882. sorry my friend but you will just have to share the rus legacy with the russians.
