I am positive that John Fahey recorded him on his Tacoma label. He was recorded as Joe Spence. I had decades ago the album. Liner notes said that Fahey had found him in an asylum, housed for 20 or more years because he had nowhere else to go. I find it very strange that Tacoma has no record. I would love to hear from someone who could corroborate, contradict, or explain.

rum and checkers and beer are a big part of bahamanian culture. His playing is unreal because he is playing fingerstyle blues and improvising the whole time.. both in the bass and the treble. If you play the guitar (I imagine you do) you know why this is so incredible! People like Ry Cooder took so much from him and James Taylor! Get his cd Music of the Bahamas! total joy to hear!

Every time I listen to Mr. Spence brings back so many sweet memories of my grandfather. Even looks like him. Makes me proud to be Bahamian!!!!

Sorry was reading through the comments. Had to correct a few things. Dominos is the game of choice for most older Bahamian men. And if you are going to speak about my country at least get our description correct. We are not Bahamanian. We are Bahamian. Joseph Spence was a fantastic guitarist and it was because of his improvisational skills. He understood how to carry both melody lines bass and treble. In time and sounded almost like two guitarists. He has no peers to his musical stylings and further no one else has been able to successfully recreate his sound. Ppl have tried many times. He is also quoted as an influence to many significant musicians to have played finger style blues.

Btw there was no Bahamian beer back then called Kalik. Kalik came out in the late 80s to mid 90s

Is he actually saying anything, or just making weird noises?
